Zen Master Genpo Rinpoche has developed a revolutionary technique for pointing out the Big Mind within. Part of the innovation of his technique is found within his method of getting the ego to step aside. This is in distinction to most spiritual practice which attempts to eliminate the ego --- a practice which often results in the ego controlling our personality even more.

I highly recommend this excercise as I found its effects to be quite profound. Please note, though, that it seems important to fully participate in the excercise rather than just passively listening. The audio file is 20 minutes in length:

are their any zen teachings that talk about harnessing the ego...unleashing it, so to speak? I think the ego is important, and shouldn't be sought after to illiminate it......but perhaps filtered and used efficiently.
    • in that view its a tool and like any other tool it has its uses in certain situations but remains limited to its design... however I think the idea is to be in the world and not of the world... the ego is good for coping with worldly matters in the context of the world... until we can truly set aside the ego it merely perpetuates karma... this is of course the buddhist line and take it or leave it, but the beauty of Buddhism is the absolute sheen of common sense which makes it so useful...

The problem with this is that the ego is often the one using you, rather than the other way around. That said, I do not suggest attempting to eliminate the ego because it wont work. As soon as you resist the ego it gains a certain power over you. Just let go of your attachment to sense objects and thoughts --- act compassionately and your true nature will show itself.

You will know when this is happening because you will be filled with joy.

cool cool. Any thoughts or ideas on "good Ego", and "Bad Ego"?
          • in duality there is good and bad, outside of that dualistic perspective there just is... what is good to you and for you isn't necessarily good to me and for me...

I agree with that immensly. Who am I to push my beliefs on you? I have nothing against God, its his fan club I can't stand....a favorite bumper sticker I recently read. I bring to the table a lot of negative energy, I have worked hard to protect my family and friends from it. I am not reffering to the choices in life, I am reffering to the negativity in life we didn't ask for or perhaps that we didn't deserve. When I was ten years of age I was sitting in on FBI meetings with my stepfather veiwing gory photos and dark files of the Son of Sam. At the age of ten I had no choice in the matter. It took me years to understand why my step father did this, but now I understand. From a spiritual energy perspective, I am sort of an untouchable. Very few people understand darkness the way I do. All this makes me think of the Masters this forum talks of. Jesus, Ghandi, Einstein, King.....these people didn't become great by turning their back on the negative forces in life. Contrary, they dove right in and faced the issues head on. Sometimes I forget that most peoples thresholds for understanding negativity are no where near mine. And I wouldn't balme anyone for turning away. My personel belief is that the more you know and understand darkness, the greater your positive light will shine. You have to go through hell to get to heaven sort of thing. Ying yan. I can give guided tours of the hell/dark energy I know with protective filters that will keep you from getting burned, and then show you one of the many ladders to climb up to the gates of heaven. I am a good person, but have been forced to deal with things I never asked for to begin with.
              • haven't we all though?
good things happen to bad people, bad things happen to good people, it's never a question of choice, it's a question of playing victim and perpetuating...
it's all perspective for anyone jason, your lows could be someone else's highs and in reverse... there is no one path to the gates of heaven and no one ever will experience the same things you have experienced, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to talk about your life in the context of others' lives...
I appreciate hearing your viewpoints gathered from your experiences, but unfortunately trying to convince someone that walking your path as being the way only brings you back to the organized fan club you have a distaste for...
we're raised in a dualistic world, its good for animal level survival I think, keeps us away from harm and leads us to food and reproduction etc... but past that, dealing with issues of light and dark when speaking of our higher selves brings us right back down into the world of duality... it's amazing what the human mind can endure, I constantly amaze myself at things I can put myself thru which I never believed before that I could tolerate... it's letting go of old ideas and limitations... I truly am sorry if you felt threatened or hurt by what you have endured, but I don't think many people haven't felt anger, hurt, disappointment, jealousy, envy and pain... you may have seen things others have not, but seeing a murder can be as painful to one person as getting bullied on the playground is to another or watching a parent slowly die of cancer is for another... emotions don't come with levels and prescriptions, I know someone who has endured a horror I could never have imagined at a young age, but she seems more well adjusted and happy than I am... go figure...
embracing our humanity is embracing all things of it, the good and the bad and letting our attachments to those go, not immersing ourselves in it or giving it away, but accepting all of it, shaking hands with ourselves and letting go...
sorry if this comes off authoritative... it isn't meant to be...

I agree wholeheartedly with most of what you said. Thankyou for your input. Healing is a wonderful thing. "Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence." Deseradata This is the main reason I have chosen to surround myself in the environment of these mountains. To listen to the creek while I chop some wood, and admire the wildlife. j
