Jesus and Buddha

This thread will try to address the similarities and differences of Jesus and the Buddha. I will quote one scripture and one sutra , and we can discuss their relationship.

And Jesus said:

"Why do you see the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, 'Friend, let me take the speck out of your eye' when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye."

(Luke 6:41)

The Buddha spoke:

"The faults of others are easier to see than one's own; the faults of others are easily seen, for they are sifted like chaff, but one's own faults are hard to see. This is like the cheat who hides his dice and shows the dice of his opponent, calling attention to the other's shortcomings, continually thinking of accusing him."

(Udanavarga 27:1)

  • Wow. Is it just me, or does Jesus come up a little mouthy in that comparison?
    • That guy must have had a really big eye to fit a whole log in it. I think his first problem would be his gigantic, mutant eye. He should really see someone about that!!!

      Yes...

      Buddha - Pearls of wisdom.

Jesus - Pearls of wisdom directed specfically at specific group of Jesus was frustrated with.

I think...Unless Buddha had a speciic audience. In which case, it seems Buddha is more mellow.

      • Lets remember that neither of these parables was written down until at least several decades after the death of Jesus and Buddha. Neither of them wrote down their teachings while they were alive, preferring to proselytise in person. Therefore, the actual wording has probably been paraphrased by their disciples.

Im struck by the similarity of meaning in the two statements. It is almost as if they are trying to say the same exact thing: do not criticize your fellow man until you yourself have become pure. They both seem to be pointing to the idea that spiritual
truth lies within oneself, rather than outside of oneself.

I think your right, and in addition i think what they both were saying is that you can't see a fault in someone else, unless its a fault within you. I find the clearer i get the more i see perfection in those around me.
  • This world is blind. Few are they who can see things as they are. As birds escaped from the net, few go to heaven. (Dhammapada 174)

Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (Mat 7:13-14)
